Como usar o Google Family Link para supervisionar o celular Android da criançaHow to use Google Family Link to supervise your child's Android phone
Create the child's account, set time limits, block apps and restrict content on Google Play. It only works on Android and Chromebook.
Passo a passo
Restringir conteúdo no Google Play
Filtrar a pesquisa do Google
- No Family Link, escolha a criança e abra "Controles" > "Pesquisa Google".
Perguntas frequentes
Who it is for and when to use it
For families whose child uses an Android phone or tablet, or a Chromebook. Family Link is Google's free app for setting time limits, choosing apps, filtering Google Play content and keeping track of where the device is.
What the control does and does not do
- It does: adjust part of the settings of the child's Google account, choose which apps they use, set time limits and bedtime, and show where the Android device is.
- It does: filter by age band the apps and content the child can download or buy in Google's store, and let you filter Google Search results.
- It does: notify you when the child asks for or installs a new app, asks for access to a blocked site, or when someone changes their activity settings.
- It does not: Family Link does not supervise your child's iPhone or iPad, or computers that are not Chromebooks. You, the guardian, can use the app on an iPhone, but the supervised device must be Android or a Chromebook.
- It does not: the guardian cannot listen to the child's calls or see their screen remotely.
- It does not: the store filter does not stop access when the child reaches the content through a direct link or a search, and purchase approvals only apply to what is paid through Google Play billing.
- In some countries the service does not exist.
Before you start
- To be the guardian in the app, have a Google account, be over 18 (or at your country's minimum age) and live in the same country as the child.
- The supervised device must be an Android from version 6.0 onwards (per-app limits need version 7 onwards) or a Chromebook running ChromeOS 71 onwards. Another Google page cites Android 5, iOS 13 and Chromebook M69 as the versions where the app "works best": since the numbers vary, check in the app store whether your device is compatible.
- You, the guardian, can use the app on Android, on an iPhone or iPad (iOS 16 onwards, according to the "get started" page) or on a Chromebook that runs Android apps. Part of the settings is also on the familylink.google.com site.
- The child and their device must be near you when you turn supervision on.
- To create a child's account, Google requires the guardian's consent, and a credit card can be used for it. You pay nothing, but a temporary charge may appear just to confirm the card is valid; in most cases it disappears within 48 hours.
- Set aside about 15 minutes to create the account.
Step by step
Create the child's Google Account (under 13)
- Open the Family Link app; if you have not installed it yet, start from the setup site.
- At the top left, tap the child's profile and then "Add child".
- Fill in the child's name, email and date of birth and sign in with your account to confirm that you, the guardian, authorise it.
- Choose the consent method you prefer and follow the screens until the confirmation appears.
Turn supervision on for an account the child already has (teenager)
- Ask the teenager to stay with you, device in hand: their consent is needed.
- On their Android device, open "Settings", then "Google" > "All services" and, under "Kids & family", tap "Parental controls" (on Android 8.1 and later, start at "Digital Wellbeing & parental controls"). Tap "Get started" and pick the account to be supervised.
- Sign in with your guardian account and go through the "About supervision" and "Changes to your child's Google services" screens together.
- Confirm the teenager's password and yours, accept the privacy notice and follow through to the end.
Set the daily screen time limit
- With Family Link open, pick the child at the top of the screen, on the left.
- Tap "Screen time" > "Time limits" and enter the limit for the day.
- To repeat it every day, tap "Apply to all days of the week" and then "Done".
- To change one specific day, use "Weekly schedule" and adjust that day.
- To give more time just for today, use the extra time option: it lasts until the end of the day without changing the schedule, and can be given when the device is locked or about to lock.
Block or allow an app
- Under "Screen time" > "Time limits" > "App limits", see the list of apps.
- Blocked apps show a lock icon. Tap the app to block or allow it.
- The change can take about five minutes to apply, or applies as soon as the device is back online.
- For an app the child may use even after the limit runs out, mark it as "Unlimited time".
See where the device is
- In Family Link, open "More" > "Location settings" and turn on "See your child's location". Location sharing must be switched on first.
- To get a notice when the child arrives at or leaves a place, mark home and school with "Add home" and "Add school".
- If the location takes a while to appear, wait a little: the official page warns it can take some time to find the device.
Restrict content on Google Play
- On the child's device, open the Google Play store and tap the profile photo or initial.
- Tap "Settings" > "Family" > "Content restrictions".
- Create a PIN only you know.
- Choose the types of content and the allowed age rating.
Filter Google Search
- In Family Link, pick the child and open "Controls" > "Google Search".
- In the SafeSearch filter, keep "Filter" or change it to "Blur" or "Off" if you want to give more freedom.
- For explicit websites, also update the filters in Google Chrome.
How to talk to your child about it
Show your child what the app can and cannot see, including that you may know where the device is. Agree on screen times together and use the limit to support the agreement, not as a surprise. If they are a teenager, remind them they can ask to leave supervision, and that talking is better than hiding.
When the child turns 13
- The age can vary by country. Supervision settings stay the same until the child decides to update the account.
- When it is time to update, the child gets an email from Google with the subject "Ready to update your Google Account?".
- Under Google's most detailed rule, anyone under 18 needs a guardian's approval to end supervision. Guardians can end it at any time, and both the child and the guardian get a notification.
- Another Google page, about accounts the teenager created themselves, says you or they can turn supervision off at any time and that, if they do, you get a notification and the supervised devices are locked for a while. Since the pages differ, check in the Family Link screen what applies in your case.
Limits and how they can be bypassed
- The limit is per device: with two devices, each has its own daily limit.
- You cannot set limits on system apps.
- With the device locked, the child can still take calls, can place emergency calls on a phone with a calling plan, and keeps using the apps marked as unlimited time.
- If the limit is on, the child cannot change the device clock.
- You can change the child's account password and sign in to it at any time, but they are told by email and are signed out.
- The guardian access code, which you see in the app or on the web, unlocks the child's device. It is not sent by email or SMS.
- The search filter (SafeSearch) is on and locked on the child's account as soon as you turn supervision on, and only guardians can change it. It only applies when the child is signed in to their account and, like any filter, does not catch everything.
- Family Link shows the location of one device at a time: if the child uses several, the most used one appears. The device must be on and connected to the internet, and the position can be slow to update.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I supervise my child's iPhone with Family Link? No. On an iPhone, use Apple's Screen Time (see the iPhone guide).
